Things to do in Glasgow

Looking for things to do and see in Glasgow? Being Scotland’s largest city and sitting on the banks of the River Clyde it’s a destination which prides itself on being a friendly and welcoming place to be whether on business or at leisure. It has been proudly named a must visit city for tourists by leading publications like the Rough Guide, New York Times & the Guardian. Glasgow has been transformed into one of the world’s top city destinations with world class architecture, outstanding shopping and vibrant nightlife surrounded by superb Scottish scenery.

Top Attractions

There is no shortage of things to do and see in Glasgow. The city has more parks per head of population than anywhere else in the UK. All museums in Glasgow are free to see such as the Riverside Transport Museum (voted top European Museum in 2013), Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Burrell Collection. For families there is the hands on Science Centre & the Scottish Football Museum. But Glasgow is just a great place to wander round its centre with almost 1800 cafes and restaurants, with some of the best shopping in the UK outside London with over 1500 shops to choose from! The Art Nouveau magic of the city’s most famous son, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, can be seen across the skyline, including at the iconic Glasgow School of Art.

With that said, myhotelbreak have put together a list of the top things to do and see in Glasgow when you come to visit on your next hotel break.

1. Pollock Country Park

This is one of the best areas to visit for some fresh air and great walking routes. Just a ten minute journey from the city centre via train to Pollockshaws and you’re at this magnificent attraction. Fantastic opportunities for walks on the well sculpted greenlands at Pollock Country Park and the popular art gallery of the Burrell Collection is a must see too, although its refurbishment will not be completed until 2020.
A great place to come and relax during your visit to the city.

2. Visit Glasgow University

If you’re a fan of Harry Potter, then a visit to the West End and the University of Glasgow is a must. With its gothic architecture, high towers and being one of the oldest Universities in the world, you’ll think you have landed in Hogwarts. It’s more than just a scene out of a film, it offers visitors the chance to see Scotland’s oldest museum, The Hunterian with its body parts and other gory exhibits. Free to enter along with the Hunterian Art Gallery.

3. Explore Ashton Lane

Have a drink and enjoy the festivities in the West End’s famous Ashton Lane. The cobbled back streets may make you think you’ve travelled back in time but it adds to the Lane’s character. Choose from an array of cocktail bars and pubs in this popular hangout for students and locals alike. Enjoy fantastic food as well with “The Chip” and The Ashoka then venture back to the other bars and enjoy a fantastic night out with family or friends.

4. Escape Glasgow

This is the pick of the Escape Rooms in the city. Open since 2014 you’ll need good problem-solving skills for this but it’s great as you work with your team to unlock the rooms in which you’re in. Get the key by cracking the codes and break yourself out! Each of the five rooms have their own theme which adds to the fun.

5. See the River Clyde

Looking to find out what Glasgow is really like? The River Clyde has long been an important part of the city and made Glasgow an important component of the British Empire. Decline took hold but after a regeneration project of the area it has become a part of the city which you can’t miss out on. With the Riverside Museum & the Tall Ship, you will get lost for hours here.

6. Enjoy shopping on Buchanan Street

Glasgow is the second largest place to shop outside of London. Buchanan Street is a great place to start on your shopping. The street runs between two of the main shopping malls (Buchanan Galleries & St Enoch Centre) and is home to some of the best designer and high-street stores around.

7. Love Football? Love the Scottish Football Museum

You can’t come to Glasgow and not learn about the football tradition of the area. Head to the iconic Hampden Park in the Southside of the city and learn more on the football culture of Glasgow. Home to an endless collection of football memorabilia you’re in for a treat.

8. Kelvingrove Park

In city areas green spaces are few and far between for the main part. This is where Glasgow bucks the trend. The city has a magnitude of parks and parkland areas to explore in the city centre and the outskirts. Kelvingrove Park is one of them. With unrivalled views of the University of Glasgow, a great bandstand that hosts gigs and summer events and of course the wonderful Botanic Gardens. It’s a place to be discovered. Also, just a short walk to the great bars and clubs of the West End.

9. Loch Lomond Isn’t far away

The great thing about Glasgow and Scotland in general it’s quite easy to reach other parts of the country in a short space of time. Just a short 30 minute drive outside of the city is Loch Lomond. The famous Loch is the biggest stretch in the UK and its home to a load of activities. From boat tours, to great walks to just sitting back and enjoying the gorgeous scenery. It’s a place tourists should come on their visit to Glasgow.

10. Drink at the Drygate Brewery

A good place to come and enjoy a pint. A huge brewery that’s home to some of the best beer around. With well over 26 beers on draft and over 200 bottled selections, beer fans are spoilt for choice. Added to the mix are large screens in the beer hall with a cute terrace for those day’s it’s not raining. If you want to find out how the magic happens, there are various tours of the brewery. Looking for a snack or a meal to go with your beverage? Pizza, burgers and a bunch of other options available so they have you covered.

These are just some of the best things to do in Glasgow. Here at myhotelbreak we have loads of hotels in Glasgow which are near to many of these aforementioned attractions. Whether you’re looking for a last minute deal or planning a city break, we have you sorted.
