Wetheral

Tourist Information

Things to see & do in Wetheral

The area's history can be traced back to before the arrival of the Romans. Three caves cut into the rock above the nearby river Eden are reputed to have been used by Constantine as a hermitage. Hence the name of Wetheral's church - 'Holy Trinity and St. Constantine' - the only Church in England to bear this name.

Inscriptions cut into the riverside rock face indicate that the 20th Roman Legion may well have been stationed nearby. It is thought that stone to build parts of Hadrian's Wall were dug from the river cliffs.

The 1830's brought the railway age to Wetheral, the renowned river Eden viaduct is a major feature of the local scenery. The line is still in use and Wetheral Station is a convenient distance from the Hotel.

Today, the village is a visual treat with many homes built from locally quarried stone. Visitors can combine a stroll around the village with walks along nearby woodland and riverside paths.
