Walking

Britain is a great place for walking, whether it be a short stroll in the countryside or challenging trails in the mountains and glens. Many of our hotels are located in scenic areas, ideal for walking, and will be happy to advise you on suggested routes once you arrive. A few hotels have more detailed walking information and this is detailed below. To book, simply click on the hotel info button and book from the hotel's own page.

New Lanark Mill Hotel
New Lanark World Heritage Site

An ideal base for walking of all levels

As well as being a fantastic historical site, New Lanark is surrounded by beautiful countryside for walking including the Falls of Clyde Nature Reserve. The most popular route in the area is a circular path which takes in the four Falls of Clyde. This trail is 8 miles long and you can make a day of it with stops in neighbouring villages for refreshements. April to June is a great time to take this route as you will find Peregrine Falcons nesting right by the walkway and the Scottish Wildlife Trust will be on hand to answer any questions. This whole area is rich in wildlife and you can expect to see badgers, foxes, squirrels and deer as well as an abundance of bird life.

Another popular walk is up Tinto Hill. Tinto Hill has a special place in the hearts of Lanarkshire people. Its graceful conical outline is easily picked out on the horizon to the south from throughout central Scotland. It is a satisfying 3 mile climb rewarding exceptional views that stretch from Northern Ireland round to the Lake District and all the way north to Lochnager. Most people climb from Fallburn, which is a well-worn and obvious route. The climb starts easily and then grows progressively steeper. Some sections are very loose underfoot.

A great guide to the area is Walking in Clydesdale by Paul Lamarra.
