Things to see & do in Pitlochry

Pitlochry is not only the largest town in Highland Perthshire. It is also the most popular for visitors who come from far and wide to enjoy this Victorian Spa town. Pitlochry has been an extremely popular place to visit by tourists for over 150 years.

Pitlochry has certainly maintained its Victorian feel in its Scottish baronial architecture, a common theme during the Victorian times. Buildings which have stodd the test of time. Many hotels featured by myhotelbreak are traditional buildings, which have been modernised but retaining the charm and character of yester year.

Pitlochry has both good road and rail links. By road the A9 skirts the town and is approx. 1 ½ drive from both Glasgow, Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Inverness. There is a rail link to Perth, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness too.

Pitlochry’s main attraction is Pitlochry dam and salmon fish ladder. There are two whisky distilleries – Edradour being the smallest whisky distillery in Scotland dating back to the 1600’s. Throughout the year Pitlochry Festival Theatre is the place to go in the evenings for plays and loads of other performances.

While there are many great things to see and do in Pitlochry, its also an ideal base to explore the local area of Highland Perthshire., and indeed further north into the Scottish Highlands. Nine miles away is Dunkeld, Scotland’s smallest city with its cathedral on the banks of the River Tay. Many fisherman holiday in Pitlochry just for the salmon fishing with the River Tay being one of the best Salmon Rivers in the UK. Heading north and just outside Pitlochry is the Queens View at Loch Tummel, a favourite place for Queen Victoria. She often stopped here on her journey to Balmoral Castle. Nearby is Blair Atholl village with its its whitewashed castle and the only castle in the Uk which has its own private army. Blair Atholl Distillery is also worthwhile place to see.

To the west of Pitlochry the scenery becomes more mountainous with vast sweeping lochs such as Loch Tay and Loch Earn. This area is walking country whether it be lochside or mountains, there is endless choice. It’s a great area for driving not only for the splendour of the scenery but also to stop off in the many quaint villages and towns near to Pitlochry. Aberfeldy, Comrie & Crieff are perhaps the most well know.

Pitlochry and its surrounding area is an impressive place to stay for a short break or a holiday and you certainly will not be short of things to see and do.
