Things To Do In Newcastle

The city owes its name to the Norman castle built in 1080, by Robert II of Normandy, the eldest son of William the Conqueror.]

The city also contains many theatres. The largest, the Theatre Royal on Grey Street, first opened in 1837. There are several major shopping areas in Newcastle city centre. The largest of these is the Eldon Square Shopping Centre, which incorporates the first and largest Fenwick department store, and a John Lewis store, also known as Bainbridges. The 2nd is the Metro Shopping centre in Gateshead just south of the city.

1. Discovery Museum

A great place to start to understand the cultural and economic history of Newcastle is the Discovery Museum. There are several exhibitions which are spread across three floors. One of the highlights is the fastest ship in the world, the impressive Turbinia that stands at 30m long. Immerse yourself in the ‘Story of Newcastle’ and the exhibition on Newcastle’s shipbuilding heritage.

2. Get artistic at BALTIC – Centre for Contemporary Art

Rivalling the iconic Tate Modern in London, this mustard coloured art gallery is a stand out inside and out. There might not be permanent exhibitions but instead there are rotating shows delivering some of the best works from some of the world’s best contemporary artists. Not just that, you have the performance space, a bar to relax in, a cinema and a wonderful rooftop restaurant where you can enjoy some great food. Other restaurants are on offer as well as a viewing box o show panoramic views of the Tyne.

3. Life Science Centre

Get hands on at these exhibits and learn and develop your thinking with the secrets of life series. Experience the Motion Ride where you undertake a bungee jump while other fascinating exhibits such as the arcade style games. Great for all the family. We suggest book in advance to avoid disappointment.

4. Explore the amazing Victoria Tunnel

Used as an air raid shelter during World War 2, the 2 and half mile stretch of tunnel under Newcastle’s streets is something to behold. Build in the mid 1800’s as a coal-wagon thoroughfare, it’s moved on a lot since then. The two hour tour takes you on an adventure of the 700m long tunnel. We suggest bringing changeable clothes and good shoes for the tour. Book in advance as it could be a busy one.

6. Enjoy something to eat at Blackfriars

A unique and popular venue for food. Blackfriars is a 13th century friary that offers a variety of modern medieval cuisine. From rare-breed pork to pigeon and much more. Pastries, breads, ice cream and other meats are also served. Booking is advised as it can get quite busy.

7. Get lost in Northumberland

8. The Fat Hippo Underground

Delve into the basement at this franchised version of the Fat Hippo in Newcastle’s city centre. If you’re a fan of burgers then this is the place to come. Whether you go for the fantastic Hippo burger or something like chicken or veg they have it here. The drinks menu comes highly recommended too.

9. The Great North Museum

What awaits you in this neoclassical building is something special. From dinosaurs, Egyptian mummies, Roman alter stones are just some of the historic exhibits that are inside. Must visits include the interactive model of Hadrian’s Wall and the life size model of the Tyrannosaurus rex. Great for kids too with lots of stuff on as well as a planetarium.

10. The Angel of the North

One of the most famous symbols of the north east of England is of course the Angel of the North. Standing at 66ft tall, you can’t miss it as it stands on top of the hill of Birtley. Awesome up close, its great to come and sample the views from top of the hill.

11. Newcastle Cathedral

One of the most imposing gothic buildings in the region, the Newcastle Cathedral is grand in its size and imposing with its spooky exterior. The clock and beautiful dome on the outside add to its charm. The grand organ can be heard when its used on a Monday.

12. Seven Stories – The Centre for Children's Books

Converted from a Victorian Mill, Seven Stories Museum was born. Dedicated to children’s literature, spanned across 7 floors. You’ll find an ever changing program of children based exhibits and original manuscripts dating back to the 1930s. There’s also a bookstore, café and coffee shop.

13. The Rising Sun Countryside Centre

Looking for a green space to explore? Inside the abundant Rising Sun Country Park is the Rising Sun Countryside Centre. Great to get away from it all if you want something more relaxing and away from city life. Walks, picnics and more are on offer here.
