The best places to visit in Scotland

Scotland is one of the world’s most romantic and romanticized countries, with a reputation that far overshadows its size. Scotland and its people have had an enormous impact on the world and by choosing to have a break in Scotland will allow you to experience why this small country is so great in so many ways. So let’s get going:

Scotland has a wealth of tourist attractions from vibrant cities to stunning natural landscapes. We just don’t have the time to mention all of our favourites, but, in our humble opinion, here are a few of the best places to visit in Scotland.

Let’s start with Edinburgh, the beautiful capital city, voted top ten city break destination in the world, with a gothic medieval old town and charismatic Georgian new town. The landmark Edinburgh castle dominates the city’s skyline, overlooking the busy shopping district of Princess Street and the Royal Mile. Home to the Royal Botanical Gardens, Holyrood Palace and the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh is a must see during holidays in Scotland.

Now, we’ll travel north and head for the Scottish Highlands, and in particular, Loch Ness. Home to the famous “Nessie”, Loch Ness is an ideal stop where you can visit Urquhart Castle and the picturesque Highland capital city of Inverness, as well as trying to spot the seldom seen Loch Ness monster.

Staying in the Scottish Highlands, the Cairngorms truly are one of the best places to visit in Scotland. Whilst making a great base for hiking holidays in Scotland, you can also visit Scottish castles and whisky distilleries on Scotland’s famous whisky trail, located in between Aviemore, Glenshee and Royal Deeside.

The Western Highlands is undoubtedly the most scenic of all and the most visited Scottish destination outside Edinburgh. Oban, Fort William and Inverness are all popular Tourist destinations. There are dozens of magical islands such as the Isle of Mull, warmed by the tail end of the Gulf Stream. The lochs the mountains, the history and the culture of its people truly makes the Highlands a must see destination.

Moving westward from the Scottish Highlands, we will arrive at the Hebrides archipelago and namely, the beautiful Isle of Skye. Set into the breath-taking rugged landscapes are idyllic Scottish castles and picturesque fishing villages. It’s a truly inspiring example of scenic perfection.

Things to do in Scotland

There are a plethora of things to do in Scotland, so here’s just a few of the stand out activities that we think are a must do.

St. Andrews is an alluring coastal town, and is well known for being the home of golf. Play a round of 18 on the world famous Old Course - the oldest golf course in the world, playing host to the biggest golf competitions. It is highly recommended for all golf lovers taking holidays in Scotland.

The landscape of Scotland, in particular the Scottish Highlands, is famed and makes for a brilliant place for outdoor activities. Climb Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis, or tackle more easy-going hikes and rambles. Scotland offers walkers the best walking in the UK, unspoilt and quiet. Our meandering rivers make great spots for kayaking, white water rafting and fishing. The spectacular coast plays host to sailing, cruising, surfing and windsurfing. The list of things to do in Scotland is endless!

Holidays in Scotland wouldn’t be complete without sampling the local cuisine. The national dish of Haggis (so well respected that Robert Burns dedicated a poem to it) is a hearty and wholesome delicacy. Other specialities include delicious seafood, namely smoked salmon, kippers, Arbroath Smokies and Cullen skink, as well as excellent game meat like venison and pheasant. Aberdeen Angus can boast of being one of the world’s best cuts of beef. Many of the best hotels in Scotland have great menus for sampling such fine foods and myhotelbreak highlight hotels which are recommended for their fine food.
