Easily accessible by road, rail or air. Ayrshire and Arran provides the visitor with some beautiful Clyde Coast scenery, as well as having some of the worlds most well known golf courses; Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry. Ancient Castles, Country Parks like Culzean Castle with magnificent walks, gardens, and interesting market towns are scattered across the region.

History & Heritage

Culzean Castle and Gardens is one of Scotlands most well known castles, dating bacl to the 18th century. It has a striking position on the cliff tops, close to Maybole. Nearby is the Electric Brae, an optical illusion � park your car and you think you are moving uphill!

Ancient Scotland was very much in Ayrshire, Robert the Bruce was born in Turnburry, the 1st Scottish Parliament was held in Ayr and not Edinburgh.

Every age has left its mark, from the stone age and the standing stones on Arran to the magnificent castles and stately homes of the 18th and 19th century. The Viking interest to Arran itself, taking you through "Scotland in miniature" � a condensed version of Scotland.

Perhaps Ayrshire's most famous resident was Robert Burns, the Scottish bard. Celebrated across the world. Visit his birthplace in Alloway and enjoy the gardens and monument built in his honour, and paintings at Rozelle House.

Golf

Ayrshire is a mecca for the golfer of all standards, with over 40 courses available. Parkland courses, many fine municipal courses, which are inexpensive, and the championship ones, like Turnburry, where the 1st Open Championship was played in 1860. Walking & Cycling

For the outdoor enthusiast, the area has much to do. For the walker, there are different grades of hillwalks and rambling. Arran poses greater challenges, such as Goat Fell, where on fine days you can see Ireland in one direction and Ben Lomond in the other.

There are many easier walks available passing on numerous nature trails & country parks. Most of Ayshire's Tourist Information Centres have full details and print out sheets.

If you fancy cycling, the National Cycling Network has routes in Ayrshire. On Arran , the coastal route is 56 miles long and is popular, providing many opportunities to enjoy fine views and major landmarks. Cycle Hire is readily available and your hotel will be happy to advise and assist.
