Stayed on 5th-7th April 2010. Friendly hotel, particularly receptionist. Excellent breakfast, dinner could have more variety. Good central point for visiting Lake District and Carlisle.

It feels like we stayed in a completely different hotel judging by the reviews of other guests. We are surprised that this hotel is rated as 4-star as we were quite disappointed to find that it really isn't up to this standard. 'Fine dining' is certainly not a phrase I would use; our evening meal in the restaurant was dreadful. The hotel is in need of a refurb, however, the staff were very friendly and polite and our room was spotless.

Hotel has clumsy lay-out; loads of doors and a few narrow corridors to go through to get to bedroom. No-one to greet us when we arrived in restaurant. Not a dedicated waitress service for restaurant; waitress seemed to dart between restaurant and bar. Stone plant pot at hotel entrance acts as cigarette end holder; it is next to frontage parking area and is blind to driver; not happy that there is now a deep scratch on my car as I hit it accidentally!

Lovely hotel in a quiet setting. Our room was spotlessly clean. Staff were friendly and efficient, particularly at dinner. Choice of cooked or continental breakfast and an excellent variety to choose from. We would definitely recommend The Gables.

Just got back from celebrating our 10th anniversary at The Gables. We stayed there when we got married. It's been expanded since then, and there are plans to expand it some more. Our 'Bridal' room was good. The bedroom was very nice, comfortable and clean, though not huge. The bathroom was great. Plenty of room in there! Nice big jacuzzi bath, and a good powerful shower. Breakfast was good. Choice of cereals, juices etc. Cooked breakfast was a little greasy, but filling. Service was always good. We went mid-week, so the hotel was quiet. There were a couple of wedding receptions going on, and everyone seemed happy with their meals etc. We'll definitely be going back.

directions were very clear, we had stayed in the area several times before. The staff were very friendly, meals were excellant even though not a full choice breakfast due to a wedding the day before which was understandable. the grounds, rooms, and overall were very well kept and excellant.

We stayed in the newly opened Ailsa Suite which was fantastic. The room was huge and the bed was so unbelievably comfortable.The bath is enormous and definatley worth the wait to fill. Dinner in the resturant was divine and the service from the staff was brilliant. We had snuck away to get married quietly and were welcomed by the staff who went out of their way to make out day perfect. They were even able to put us in touch with two "professional wedding witnesses", a couple who spend their retirement witnessing hundreds of weddings a year for nothing more than their own enjoyment.

I stayed here on a business trip in Sept 2007. This is a very pleasant hotel, with very friendly and attentive staff. The breakfast was lovely too – lots of variety and choice of cereals, breads, juice, fresh fruit etc. The rooms were comfortable and more than adequate without being luxurious. The only thing I didn’t like was the walk from the reception area to the bedroom block I was in: something of a maze, and I admit I got lost! Still, this is something you have to expect in a hotel which has had numerous additions / extensions over the years. Despite this, I would recommend this hotel without hesitation. Overall very good value for money.

We stayed at the hotel for two nights for a relatives wedding. On arrival we were informed that we were upgraded to the Bridal Suite - which gave extras such as Four Poster Bed and Jacuzzi. Room was very comfortable, normal twin rooms looked very good as well. Breakfast was fantastic with cooked breakfast prepared when asked for, so all freshly cooked and good selection of cereals, toast, yogurts etc. Wedding reception was held at The Gables and could not fault anything service and food were absolutely excellent and would highly recommend. Would definately return again Staff very helpful
